Big Blue breezes past Lasell in straight sets

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England broke away from a tie late in the 1st set with five of six points to take the frame and never looked back, recording a 3-0 women's volleyball victory over Lasell College on Saturday afternoon (Sep. 3) at the Harold Alfond Forum. Set scores were 25-20, 25-13, and 25-18.

Grayson Szczepaniak led the Nor'easters (1-1) with 12 points, behind a team-high seven kills, three aces, and two solo blocks. Rene Roggenbuck added six winners and had a hand in four blocks. Katie Flynn contributed five kills and eight digs. Kristen Falcinelli dialed up 28 assists, while, defensively, Brittany Morrison and Katie Marsh combined for 23 digs (13/10) and five aces (2/3).

For the Lasers (0-1), Michele Canestro tallied a match-best 10 kills, and Meredith Eagan added six. Taylor Tiezzi posted a double-double with 21 assists and 13 digs. Caitlyn Garcia registered a contest-high 15 digs.

In the 2nd set, UNE separated from a 9-7 advantage with a 13-1 run, and then in the 3rd, it was a 10-1 stretch by Big Blue that reversed a one-point deficit (14-13) on the way to the victory.

Both squads return to the court on Wednesday. The Nor'easters will be headed to the University of Southern Maine (6 p.m.), while Lasell is scheduled to host Colby-Sawyer College (7 p.m.).
