BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Elly Buford scored a pair of second-half goals to give the Eastern Nazarene College Lions a 2-1 come-from-behind win over the University of New England in a Commonwealth Coast Conference men's soccer match Saturday afternoon (Sept. 24) at Barbara J. Hazard Field.
With the Lions trailing 1-0 at intermission, Buford went to work in the early stages of the second half. He tied the score with 5:10 elapsed, chipping a shot over the head of UNE goalkeeper
Elijah Leverett after Andrew Nelson had found him with a feed from the right side.
Buford would notch the game-winner just 4:07 later off an ENC set piece. Buford controlled a long service by Ian Carson and put home a shot from just inside the top of the box.
UNE (1-4-4, 0-2-1) had established a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute when
Callum Heaslewood found
Ryan Stephens in front of the net, and the senior co-captain guided the ball across the goal line for his first marker of the year.
Scoring chances were scarce the entire afternoon, as Eastern Nazarene held a slim 8-6 margin in shots.Â
Winning goalkeeper Jameson McFarland had three saves, while Leverett finished with a pair.
Both teams have non-conference matches up next. The Lions host Becker College on Tuesday, and UNE travels to Worcester, Mass. on Wednesday to face Clark University.
