Nor'easters hold on late for big 9-8 win over SRU

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. -- The University of New England Nor'easters held off a late charge by Salve Regina University to take a 9-8 Commonwealth Coast Conference victory Saturday afternoon (April 9) at Gaudet Field.

Mitch Mullin, Dan Auger and Tom Luttrell each had two goals to pace the attack for UNE (8-5, 3-1 CCC). Mullin's goal 2:47 into the final quarter proved to be the game-winner for the Nor'easters, who also received a goal apiece from Connor Leggett, Andrew Curro and Alex Zadworny.

Andrew Ferra scored a game-high three goals for Salve Regina (9-5, 2-3), which saw Nick LoCicero and Zach Makoske each tally a pair.

Although tied on several occasions, the Nor'easters never trailed in the contest. Tom Luttrell notched the lone goal of the first quarter to give UNE a 1-0 lead. Scoring opened up in the second quarter, with each team tallying four times to make the score 5-4 in favor of the Nor'easters at halftime.

UNE solidified its lead in the third frame, outscoring Salve Regina 3-1 to establish a 8-5 advantage. Mullin, Leggett and Auger scored consecutive markers to give the Nor'easters momentum heading into the final frame.

The Nor'easters pushed their lead to 9-5 on a goal by Mullin early in the fourth before Lociero scored a goal and set-up two others to get the Seahawks back within one (9-8) with 1:43 on the clock. UNE would hold Salve off the board the rest of the way to earn the win.

John Dusel and David Pearson split time in goal, combining to make 15 saves. Pearson earned the win for the Nor'easters, who return to action Tuesday at Wentworth Institute of Technology (7 p.m.).
