BEVERLY, Mass. -- Colin Bannon had two goals and four assists, including three in the second quarter when Endicott College outscored the University of New England 4-0, to help lead the Gulls to a hard-fought 13-11 Commonwealth Coast Conference victory in the final regular season game for both teams Tuesday evening (April 26) at Hempstead Stadium.
With the win Endicott climbs to the .500 mark at 8-8, while concluding its conference schedule with a 7-1 mark. The Nor'easters will take a 10-7 ledger (5-3 CCC) into Saturday's opening round of the CCC Championship.
Will Jennings had a team-best three goals to go with three assists for Endicott. Thomas Harvey, Peter Field and Mitchell Tapley joined Bannon as multiple-goal scorers. Tommy Hughes helped jump-start the Gulls' attack by winning 21 of 27 face-offs and collecting 14 ground balls.
Andrew Curro led the way for UNE with a hat-trick, while
Mitch Mullin,
Dan Auger and
Tom Luttrell contributed two goals apiece. Auger was credited with four assists to establish school single-season records for points and assists, topping the previous marks of 65 (points) and 35 (assists) set by Tyler Thomas in 2013.
UNE got three goals from Curro to establish a 5-4 edge in a high-scoring first quarter, but the Gulls responded with four unanswered markers in the second to take an 8-5 cushion into the break. After each squad tallied three times in the third to make the score 11-8 in favor of the Gulls, the Nor'easters closed to within one twice (11-10, 12-11) in the final frame before Field notched an insurance goal with 0:35 remaining.
Endicott held substantial margins in shots (50-26), ground balls (46-32) and face-offs won (21-6), but UNE goalkeepers
John Dusel and
David Pearson combined to make 20 saves to help the Nor'easters stay within striking distance.
Sam Coburn led UNE with seven ground balls.
The Nor'easters will host Salve Regina University in one of Saturday's quarterfinal-round matches. The entire CCC Championship schedule will be released later tonight.
