BIDDEFORD, Maine -- After falling behind 3-1 early in the 2nd quarter, the University of New England tallied all but one of the game's 12 goals the rest of the way to register a 12-4 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's lacrosse victory over Nichols College on Saturday afternoon (Apr. 23) at the Big Blue Turf.
The Nor'easters (10-6) improve to 5-2 in league play with the win -- their eighth straight against the Bison (4-11, 0-7 CCC). The result keeps Big Blue in the running for a first-round bye in the upcoming CCC Championship, with one contest remaining in the regular-season.
Tom Luttrell and
Mitch Mullin paced the triumphant attack with three goals apiece.
Dan Auger netted two goals just 31 seconds apart in the 2nd, and added two assists.
Andrew Curro and
Alex Zadworny each chipped in with one marker and one assist.
Defensively,
Sam Coburn scooped up a team-high five ground balls, while
Wyatt Ehrhardt and
Pat Pohle combined to force eight Nichols turnovers. In the cage, starter
John Dusel and
David Pearson recorded three and five saves, respectively.
Auger leveled the match with 8:29 left before halftime, and Luttrell pushed UNE ahead, 5-3, with scores at 7:01 and 0:29.
Mullin and Luttrell extended to a four-goal cushion (7-3) in the 3rd, and, following an NC goal in the 4th to trim the gap to three, five different Nor'easters found the back of the net down the stretch to provide separation.
For the Bison, Reece O'Connor had a goal and two assists. Goalie Brian McKinley picked up a game-best seven ground balls on top of 18 saves, as his side was out-shot by a 51-23 margin.
UNE will visit Endicott College (6-1 CCC) on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. game.
