No. 17 Western New England tops UNE, 16-13

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Western New England University built a 12-4 halftime advantage en route to a 16-13 Commonwealth Coast Conference victory over the University of New England in men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon (April 16) at the Big Blue Turf.

The Golden Bears (10-3, 6-0 CCC) -- ranked 17th nationally -- extended their winning streak to six games, while the Nor'easters (9-6, 4-2) saw their three-game streak come to an end.

Justin Bard and Jon Bota each scored four goals for Western New England. The duo accounted for seven first-half tallies to help the visitors build their eight-goal (12-4) cushion.  Keegan Dudeck chipped in three goals, while Taylor Dubose and Jared Ward had two apiece.

The Nor'easters had three different players with a trio of goals -- Tom Luttrell, Mitch Mullin and Andrew Curro. Dan Auger dished out a game-high four assists.

Down 15-8 heading into the final frame, UNE made things interesting in the final quarter by outscoring WNE 5-1. Auger had a hand in three of the goals (1 goal, 2 assists), while Curro tallied twice.

Senior face-off specialist David Cedrone was brilliant at the dot for the Golden Bears, winning 18 of 19 draws and collecting 12 ground balls. For the day Western New England earned 25 face-off wins in 33 tries.

Steven Kerr took the win in goal with 10 stops in a complete-game performance. John Dusel and David Pearson each played a half for UNE. Dusel registered nine stops and Pearson eight.

The Golden Bears had the better part of the stat sheet, leading in shots (47-30) and ground balls (37-27).

Western New England will host Curry College for a CCC match Wednesday (7 p.m.). UNE is idle until next Saturday when Nichols College comes to Biddeford for the Nor'easters' final regular-season home contest (1 p.m.).
