NEWPORT, R.I. -- Salve Regina University scored just four runs on the day, but that was enough to sweep (2-0, 2-1) the University of New England in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) softball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon (Apr. 13) at Toppa Field.
The Seahawks improve to 9-11 overall and 7-3 in CCC outings while upping their win streak to six outings. The two setbacks leave the Nor'easters (15-7) at 6-4 in conference action.
Kelsey Boarman and Nicole Parry secured the results, limiting the UNE to a combined seven hits.
SRU got a one-out double from Lexi Soucie in the bottom of the 2nd frame in
GAME 1, and, following an error, the hosts went up on a sacrifice flyout. Salve added another run in the 5th, when a two-out error was backed-up by an RBI-triple to left field by Amanda Riley.
Meanwhile, Boarman took a no-hit bid into the 6th before a pair of one-out singles by UNE's
Amanda Vallante and
Kelly Murphy. Those hits loaded the bases, coming after a walk to the second batter of the inning, however Boarman recorded a strikeout and fielded a grounder to end the threat.
Avery Alberghini notched Big Blue's third hit off Boarman in the 7th, but the Salve pitcher finished it off with four strikeouts against three walks.
Abby Lambert took the loss in the circle for the visitors, in spite of both runs counting as unearned. Her line was very similar to Boarman, with three hits allowed, two walks, and four strikeouts.
In
GAME 2, it was UNE's
Katelyn Austin keeping the opponent in-check early on, retiring the first 10 SRU batters. The Nor'easters also slipped in front during that time, when a one-out double to left-center by
Meghan Bolano in the 3rd inning turned into a run with a couple wild throws moments after the play seemed to settle.
With two away in the bottom of the 5th, back-to-back singles by Emily Woznick and Megan Guest, followed by a walk, set the stage for Lindsey Florent and a two-RBI double to swing Salve Regina ahead (2-1).
Parry closed the door on any potential rally and wound up with six strikeouts against four hits and no free passes.
Austin wasn't far off, surrendering four hits and a walk while fanning three. Bolano had two hits for UNE, with one apiece for
Sydney Helmbrecht and
Caroline Schoenbucher.
Next: The Nor'easters will look to rebound on Friday (3 p.m.) when Gordon College comes to Maine.
