Alex Zadworny scored half of the University of New England's six first-quarter goals, as the Nor'easters defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology 13-8 in Commonwealth Coast Conference men's lacrosse action Tuesday evening (April 12) at Sweeney Field.
UNE won for the seventh time in its last eight games to up its record to 9-5 overall, 4-1 in conference play. The Leopards dropped to 3-9 (1-3 CCC).
Zadworny,
Dan Auger and
Mitch Mullin finished with three goals apiece to pace the Nor'easters' attack. Auger also contributed three assists to register six points -- the fourth time in the last six games he has had five or more points.
Tom Luttrell chipped in two goals.
Spencer Allen scored a game-high four goals for Wentworth. Alec Paradis (3 goals, 2 assists) and Nick Parent (5 assists) each totaled five points.
After a scoreless initial seven-plus minutes, the Nor'easters opened the scoring on a goal by Zadworny with 7:08 remaining in the first quarter. UNE would explode for five more markers in the quarter -- two by Zadworny -- to establish a 6-0 lead.
Allen tallied a pair of goals in the second as the Leopards outscored UNE 3-1 in the frame to cut into the deficit.
WIT would get as close as three (8-5) with 8:20 remaining in the third, but UNE countered with five of the next six goals to pull away. Auger capped the run with his third goal of the evening at 2:01 of the fourth quarter before Allen and Paradis closed the scoring in the final 1:29.
Sean Conger and
Matt Layton combined to win 17 of 21 face-offs for UNE, which took 18 of 23 for the match. The Nor'easters also held a commanding advantage in ground balls (49-38), paced by a team-high six from
Wyatt Ehrhardt and five apiece by Auger and Layton.
John Dusel (4 saves) played the first half in goal to earn the win for UNE.
David Pearson was credited with five saves in the second half.
Scott Boucher and Adam Dufault combined for 21 saves for the Leopards.
The Nor'easters have a date with nationally-ranked Western New England University Saturday. UNE hosts the No. 17 Golden Bears at 4 p.m.
