Box ScorePORTLAND, Maine -- Three different players scored two goals apiece, as the University of New England men's lacrosse team halted a three-game losing streak with a 10-3 non-conference win over Saint Joseph's College of Maine in a match played in steady rain Tuesday (March 15) at Deering High School's Memorial Stadium.
Andrew Curro,
Alex Zadworny and
Mitch Mullin were each multiple-goal scorers for the Nor'easters (3-4), while
Sam Cloutier,
J.T. Oliver,
Tom Luttrell and
Sam Coburn added one apiece.
Dan Auger had a match-best four assists, and Cloutier contributed a pair.
For St. Joe's (1-4), Jake O'Brien, Matt Donnell and Ian Forbes did the scoring. O'Brien was in on all three Monks' goals, adding two assists.
Tied 1-1 after one quarter, UNE grabbed the lead for good with three second-quarter markers to take a 4-1 advantage into intermission. Mullin tallied two of UNE's three scores in the pivotal second frame.
The Monks would score the initial two goals coming out of halftime to close to within one (4-3), but UNE closed the stanza with back-to-back goals by Cloutier and Zadworny to establish a 6-3 cushion.
Big Blue went on to out-score SJC 4-0 in the final quarter.
The Nor'easters held significant advantages in shots (49-18), ground balls (37-20) and face-offs won (11-5) while converting 3 of 8 man-up opportunities.
Connor Leggett had a strong match for UNE, winning 5 of 6 draws and scooping up a game-high five ground balls.
Chris Harlow offered four ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Goalkeepers
John Dusel and
David Pearson each played a half in goal for UNE and accounted for six saves. Connor Trainor recorded a total of 18 stops in a losing effort for the Monks.
UNE will make the long trip to Philadelphia for a Saturday neutral-site game versus Ferrum College (Va.) at historic Franklin Field. Game time is slated for 10:30 a.m.
