WENHAM, Mass. -- After rolling through the first two frames, Gordon College needed a late rally to complete a 3-0 sweep of the University of New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's volleyball action Wednesday evening (Oct. 5) at the Bennett Center. Set scores were 25-9, 25-11, and 25-23.
The Fighting Scots (10-7, 4-0 CCC) received match-highs eight kills and six aces from Mackenzie Hinds, with seven winners and nine digs out of Carleigh Petersen. Meghan Hokanson contributed six kills and part of three blocks, and Renee Cooprider tallied 22 assists. Maggie Risma had 12 digs to go with four service aces.
Rene Roggenbuck had a team-best five kills and a pair of solo blocks for the Nor'easters (9-7, 2-2 CCC).
Kristen Falcinelli notched 16 assists. Defensively,
Brittany Morrison and
Nikki Mathewson went for 14 and 10 digs, respectively.
Looking to stay in the match in the 3rd set, UNE turned an early 2-0 deficit into a 5-2 advantage, and never trailed again until the deciding stretch. Gordon did manage to pull back into seven ties along the way, but the visitors held a 23-21 edge a Hokanson winner and three straight kills by Hinds swung the hosts in front for good.
Big Blue is slated to entertain the University of Southern Maine and Maine Maritime Academy in a non-league tri-match on Saturday (11 a.m.).
