WATERVILLE, Maine -- Aliza Van Leesten's golden goal with 9:42 elapsed in overtime gave the Colby College women's soccer team a 2-1 come-from-behind win over the University of New England in a non-conference match played Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 5) on Mayflower Hill.
After the Nor'easters possessed the ball deep in Colby's defensive end, the Mules countered right before the first overtime period was to end. Hannah Brozdowski played a ball forward that Van Leesten ran down and controlled before beating UNE's goalkeeper, who had come off the goal line to challenge the play. Van Leesten found the back of the open net to give the Mules the victory.
Trailing 1-0 in the closing stages of regulation, the Mules forced overtime when Nicola Katz scored with 8:46 remaining off an assist from Emily Martin.
The Nor'easters had taken a 1-0 advantage in the 29th minute on the fourth goal of the season by
Edie Pallozzi, which was set up by
Taylor Littlefield Langevin and
Katie Beaudoin on a corner kick situation.
UNE led in both shots (19-16) and corner kicks (7-2) for the afternoon.
Samantha Rizzo had 10 saves for Colby, while
Brielle Robinson made five for UNE.
The Nor'easters will play a Commonwealth Coast Conference match Friday afternoon at Curry College (4 p.m.).
