STANDISH, Maine -- Victoria Huntley racked up 21 kills to go with five aces and two blocks to lead Saint Joseph's College (Maine) to a 3-1 victory over the University of New England in women's volleyball action Thursday evening (Oct. 27) at the Alfond Center. Set scores were 25-23, 26-24, 22-25, and 25-18.
The Monks (11-11) received 10 kills in support from Shadai Gosselin, and Sarah Dyer paced the attack with 39 assists. Jennelle Thompson paced the defensive effort with 33 digs, while Gosselin, Huntley, and Dyer all established double-doubles with their respective dig totals of 20, 16, and 14.
For the Nor'easters (13-11),
Rene Roggenbuck had a team-high 14.5 points, largely from eight kills and five solo blocks.
Erika Sawicki registered nine winners and 25 digs. Several others reached double digits in digs, as well, as
Katie Marsh posted 19,
Katie Flynn with 14, Maddy Blake at 12, and
Kristen Falcinelli with 10. Falcinelli also set up the offensive system with 32 assists.
St. Joe's used an 8-1 stretch to gain an early edge in the 1st (11-4). UNE managed to stay within striking distance and formed an 8-2 run to even things at 21-all. The teams traded two-point swings before Jordynne Copp and Huntley put down kills to secure the frame for the hosts (25-23).
Big Blue tallied seven points in a span of eight to take an 18-13 advantage in the 2nd, but the Monks had play back level at 20-all. It was tied again at 24-24, when a UNE error and kill by Huntley established a two-set cushion.
The Nor'easters started strong in the 3rd, jumping out to a 12-3 margin. They never relinquished that lead, although SJC pulled within one at 17-16, 19-18, and 20-19, before UNE soon got a winner from
Grayson Szczepaniak to book the 25-22 decision.
Saint Joseph's began the 4th with a 7-1 spurt, but then conceded five unanswered points as the Nor'easters knotted things at 15-all. Of the ensuing eight points, Huntley accounted for five and restored the Monks' lead on the way to clinching the match.
UNE (3-5 CCC) returns home for Senior Day on Saturday (1 p.m.) and a date with Salve Regina University (4-4 CCC).
