Roger Williams tops UNE in straight sets

BRISTOL, R.I. -- Molly Quilty and Roger Williams University defeated the University of New England by a 3-0 margin on Tuesday evening (Oct. 25) in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's volleyball action at the Campus Rec Center. Set scores were 25-15, 26-24, and 25-16.

The Hawks (16-7, 7-1 CCC) were paced by Quilty's 12 kills, and Kristen Boyer supported with eight winners to go with four aces and nine digs. Julia Fields put up 27 assists to aid the attack, while Maria Batas picked up 14 digs on defense.

Erika Sawicki, Rene Roggenbuck, and Maddy Blake each tallied six kills for the Nor'easters (13-10, 3-5 CCC). Kristen Falcinelli had 24 assists and a team-high eight digs.

RWU dropped the first two points of the match only to respond with seven in-a-row, sparking a 16-2 run that left the hosts in control -- although UNE managed to draw back within five (18-13) for a moment.

The teams were separated by no more than two early in the 2nd, until five unanswered gave the Hawks an 18-12 cushion. Roggenbuck notched back-to-back kills to vault UNE into a tie at 24-all, but a service error and block kept Roger Williams in front.

In the 3rd, the Hawks rattled off nine straight points to gain a 14-5 lead. The Nor'easters reduced the deficit to five (20-15), but could not get any closer.

Big Blue is scheduled to visit Saint Joseph's College (Maine) on Thursday for a 6 p.m. non-league contest.
