BIDDEFORD, Maine --
Rene Roggenbuck dialed up 15 kills with an attack percentage of .565 to help pace the University of New England in a 3-1 women's volleyball victory over Colby College on Wednesday evening (Oct. 12) at the Harold Alfond Forum. Set scores were 25-18, 23-25, 25-11, and 25-23.
Additionally, the Nor'easters (12-8) received a double-double of 10 kills and 13 digs out of
Maddy Blake, and nine more winners from
Grayson Szczepaniak.
Erika Sawicki and
Bekah Mather each contributed seven kills, and Sawicki matched Blake's 13 digs.
Kristen Falcinelli tallied 45 assists to guide the offense, while
Nikki Mathewson registered 19 digs on defense.
For the Mules (4-15), Karolina Serhan, Elizabeth Noyes, and Paige Hanssen all notched seven kills. Hanssen shared the team-high of seven digs with Emily Moslener, who posted nine assists and five service aces. Molly Manuel recorded 16 assists, and Serhan had a piece in four of Colby's nine blocks.
At the start, the visiting side led by as many as four until UNE pulled even at 11-all. The Mules were up 14-12 moments later before five unanswered for the Nor'easters kicked off a 13-4 closing run to claim the set. Roggenbuck, Blake, and Szczepaniak each had a pair of winners in the stretch.
Big Blue jumped out to a 13-7 cushion in the 2nd, but five errors brought Colby back to 13-all. The hosts regained the edge at 21-17, only to concede five in-a-row to the Mules. Though UNE went up 23-22, a kill by Noyes and two aces from Mae Sefransky leveled the contest at a set apiece.
Play was almost all for the Nor'easters in the 3rd, as a 10-5 advantage swelled to commanding 22-5 padding. Sawicki had three of the eight winning points in the span, and
Katie Marsh dropped in two aces.
The Mules possessed an 8-4 edge lead in the 4th, but lost it as UNE took nine of the next 10 points to gain control for good (13-9). Colby cut the gap to one, only to see it restored to five (17-12). Things were tied at 19, 20, 22, and 23, with Big Blue emerging in front on each occasion. After no kills in the previous frame, Roggenbuck chalked the last two points as part of her seven in the last stanza.
Colby was hampered by 17 service errors in the match.
UNE is off until next Wednesday (7 p.m.) when it visits Eastern Nazarene College for a Commonwealth Coast Conference duel. The Mules make the trip to Bowdoin on Friday (7 p.m.) for a NESCAC game.
