Box ScoreBIDDEFORD, Maine -- The Bowdoin College men's soccer team scored a pair of goals early in the match, and put the game with five second-half tallies on its way to a season-opening 7-0 victory over the University of New England in a non-conference match played Tuesday evening (Sept. 8)Â under the lights at Barbara J. Hazard Field.
The Polar Bears would get the only offense they would need just 4:04 into the contest when senior Connor Keefe converted a header off a cross from classmate Andrew Jones.
Bowdoin doubled its lead in the 18th minute as Jones deposited a high left-footed shot from the top of the box just under the crossbar. The visitors carried that 2-0 advantage into intermission after leading 10-3 in shots over the first 45 minutes.
The Polar Bears exploded for five goals in the second frame. First-year Moctar Niang put home a header off a corner kick in the 50th minute, and Jones followed with his second marker of the evening less than three minutes later to extend the Bowdoin advantage to 4-0.
Junior Cedric Charlier made the score 5-0 in the 66th minute, driving a low shot into the back of the net from just inside the the 18. Bowdoin would tally twice in the final 10 minutes -- sophomore Riley Bubb off a rebound, and classmate Nick DiStefano on a penalty kick.
Sophomore goalkeeper Stevie Van Siclen earned the win in goal, making one stop over the opening 82:17. Senior Kyle Gurtowski played the rest of the way for the Polar Bears, who open NESCAC play Saturday at Amherst College (2:30 p.m).
UNE (1-2) received four saves from junior
