Box ScoreLEWISTON, Maine --
Becca Murphy scored consecutive goals less than 10 minutes apart early in the second half to provide the scoring, as the University of New England shut out Bates College, 2-0, in a non-conference women's soccer match Tuesday afternoon (Sept. 22) at Russell Street Field.
The win improved the Nor'easters' record to 5-2-0, while the Bobcats suffered their first setback of the season to dip to 3-1-1. After a 19-year drought between victories over Bates, UNE has earned a win in the last two meetings.
Murphy provided the margin for victory in the 48th minute, taking a pass from
Jessica Meader and lifting a shot from 30 yards out over the outstretched arms of Bates' keeper Sarah McCarthy and just inside the right post.
Murphy would add an insurance goal in the 57th minute to push her team-leading marker total to four. McCarthy thwarted Meader on a breakaway, but Murphy collected the rebound and blasted home a shot from 10 yards out.
For the game, Bates held a 35-17 advantage in shots but were limited to very few quality bids as 23 of its 35 attempts were off-frame. UNE goalkeeper
Brielle Robinson registered 10 saves for her second consecutive shutout.
The Bobcats' best scoring opportunity came in the 33rd minute. After Robinson made the initial stop of a shot by Libby Masalsky, UNE defenders helped clear the ball off the goal line before a Bates player could convert the loose ball.
McCarthy totaled eight saves for Bates.
UNE is back in action Saturday when the Nor'easters head to Newport, R.I. for a Commonwealth Coast Conference match versus Salve Regina University. Start time is noon.
