Knoth's hat-trick powers Bates past UNE

LEWISTON, Maine -- Peabo Knoth scored three times to lead the Bates College men's soccer team to a 6-0 shutout of the University of New England in a non-conference match played Thursday night (Sept.. 17) at Garcelon Field.

Luis Pereira had a hand in five of Bates' six goals, scoring twice and setting up three markers. PJ DiBenedetto had the other goal for the Bobcats (3-0), who displayed impressive efficiency on offense, scoring six times on just nine shots on goal (20 total shots).

DiBenedetto got Bates on the scoreboard in the 11th minute, and Knoth followed with his first goal less than two minutes later. Knoth and Pereira would tally late in the first half to provide the hosts with a 4-0 advantage at intermission.

Knoth completed his hat-trick in the 52nd minute, and Pereira wrapped up the scoring in the 64th.

Bates received a total of two saves from three different goalkeepers, while Nate Diffin had a pair of saves for UNE (2-4).

The Nor'easters return to conference play Saturday with a home match versus Curry College. Kick-off is scheduled for noon.
