Dan Good broke a 1-1 tie with a goal in the 60th minute as the University of New England rallied in the second half to take a 2-1 non-conference men's soccer win over Maine Maritime Academy in a mutual season-opener played Tuesday evening (Sept. 1) at Ritchie Field.
Jonathan Reeks had given the Mariners a 1-0 lead in the first half on a corner kick, depositing a header into the back of the net in the 29th minute.
UNE got into the scoring column early in the second half when
Erik Holmqvist tied the score in the 51st minute.
Lee Esposito found Holmqvist on a set piece, and Holmqvist converted with a header.
Good's game-winner came after
Ryan Rousseau found him off a throw-in. Good took several touches before driving the ball into the back of the net.
Elijah Leverett picked up the victory in goal for UNE, stopping four shots. The Nor'easters were efficient on the offensive end of the field, scoring twice on 10 shots, compared to one goal in 17 attempts for Maine Maritime.
The University of New England returns to action Friday when Saint Joseph's College comes to Biddeford for the home-opener starting at 7 p.m.
