Martin nets OT marker to lift Scots past UNE

Box Score

WENHAM, Mass. -- Jake Martin recorded his fifth goal of the contest with 1:17 gone in overtime to send Gordon College to an 11-10 victory over the University of New England in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's lacrosse regular-season finale Wednesday evening (Apr. 22) at the Brigham Athletic Complex.

The Fighting Scots (7-9, 4-4 CCC) move up to secure the No. 5 seed for the upcoming conference championship that begins on Saturday. The Nor'easters (3-5 CCC) conclude their 2015 campaign with an overall ledger of 8-9.

The match was never separated by more than two goals either way, and the deadlock at the end of regulation was the fifth of the night.

UNE led 3-2 after 15 minutes and and then 6-4 heading into halftime. Following two goals for Gordon and two the other way for the Nor'easters in the 3rd quarter (8-6), the Fighting Scots came out in the 4th frame with four unanswered to swing the advantage in their direction. During the second half, Martin accounted for three goals and Michael Utz registered a pair.

With 3:30 to go in the game, Big Blue's Dan Auger got it back to 10-9 on a feed from Tom Luttrell. The Fighting Scots won the ensuing face-off, however once the initial shot was saved, UNE went the other way for an extended possession that featured four saves by Gordon netminder Cody Greenwald. A man-up opportunity kept play in the GC defensive zone, but another stop from Greenwald halted the threat.

Attempting to run out the final 48 seconds, the Nor'easters sent a double-team to the corner and forced a turnover. Coming out of a timeout, then with 15 seconds on the clock, Auger needed only five to slip in front and pocket the tying goal with 0:10 showing.

Gordon's long-distance try at the horn presented little trouble for UNE goalkeeper David Pearson, who made his 10th save.

The extra session started with a lengthy battle for control of the face-off, and the eventual win for the visitors turned quickly into a turnover. The Fighting Scots paused to set their attack and Martin curled out from behind the cage to drop in the winner.

Nico Manganiello and Jordan Heckelmann each added two for the hosts, while Peter Kovacevic had a game-high eight ground balls after going 13-of-22 at the face-off X. Greenwald racked up 21 saves in the contest, as Gordon was out-shot by a 47-36 margin.

Auger totaled four goals and two assists to pace the Nor'easters, and Luttrell chipped in with two goals and two helpers. Andrew Curro contributed a pair of scores and Sean Conger picked up a team-best six ground balls.
