First-half showing helps Hawks fly by Nor'easters

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Junior Nick Gagnon had a goal and four assists in the first half to help Roger Williams University build an 8-0 lead on its way to a 13-6 win over the University of New England in a Commonwealth Coast Conference men's lacrosse match played Saturday afternoon (April 18) at the Big Blue Turf.

Winners of nine of their last 10 matches, the Hawks improved to 11-4 on the season (5-2 CCC). UNE slipped back to the .500 mark at 8-8 and is 3-4 in conference play.

Junior Will Siefert had a game-high three goals and two assists to lead the way for Roger Williams. Classmate Tim Kelly and sophomore AJ Core each scored a pair of markers.

Sophomore David Rubenstein and first-year Tom Luttrell had three points apiece for UNE. Luttrell had two goals and an assist, while Rubenstein contributed a goal and two assists. Seniors Shamus Higginbottom and Andrew Kelly and sophomore Dan Auger completed Big Blue's scoring total.

Roger Williams led from start-to-finish, scoring four times in both the first and second quarters. Siefert was the lone Hawk to score multiple times before intermission, with seven different RWU players getting into the scoring column.

The Nor'easters outscored the visitors 4-2 in the third frame, and each squad tallied three times in the final period.

Junior Dan Arket was dominant in the face-off circle for the Hawks, winning 17 of 20 draws. Junior Eric Valenti scooped up a game-high seven ground balls to help RWU to a 50-34 margin in that category. Senior Luke Aubrey recorded the win in goal, making five saves over the opening 54:23 of action.

Senior Steven Hughes had six caused turnovers and five ground balls for the Nor'easters. Junior John Dusel and sophomore David Pearson split time in goal for UNE and combined to make 18 stops.

Both teams conclude their regular seasons Wednesday. Roger Williams hosts Nichols College at 7 p.m., and the Nor'easters head to Gordon College for a match starting at that same time.
