WENHAM, Mass. -- Adrienne Chase tallied seven hits, five runs batted in, and four runs scored to lead a potent University of New England lineup to a pair of Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) wins over Gordon College in softball action Saturday afternoon (Apr. 11). UNE took the opener in five innings, 11-1, and finished the day with a 12-5 decision.

The Nor'easters (14-9, 8-2 CCC) have now triumphed in the last 16 meetings against the Fighting Scots (3-16, 2-6 CCC).

Chase did her damage in eight at-bats, while Kelly Murphy went 6-for-6 with four RBI and Amanda Vallante went 5-for-5 with seven runs scored. Sydney Hemlbrecht had three hits and four runs across the twinbill, and Meghan Bolano added two hits, two runs, and three RBI.

Meanwhile, in the circle, Katelyn Austin tossed a one-hitter to begin the day, and Sara Pelkey finished strong to end it.

UNE plated three runs in both the 1st and 2nd innings of GAME ONE to take control. Big Blue had just six hits in the sessions, but was aided by five walks and an error.

The Nor'easters tacked on four more in the 4th, including one on an RBI-single by Austin.

Austin, who surrendering a walk to start her outing, retired the next 11 Gordon batters before giving up a home run over the left-center fence by Kara Pepper. A second free pass followed, but that was all the hosts would get from the UNE hurler. Austin fanned eight as she improved to 6-3 on the season.

Paige Moore-Haskell had a pair of hits and runs in the contest to support the Big Blue cause. Chase notched hits in all four of her at-bats

For the Fighting Scots, Emily Kline took the loss.

An RBI-single by Chase that scored Vallante and the ensuing RBI-double by Murphy that scored Chase gave UNE another early lead (2-0) in GAME TWO.

But this time, Gordon responded quickly with four with two out in the bottom of the 1st, although a pair of errors by the visitors extended the frame. Kline had a two-RBI single and Sarah Ryder homered to left-center to make it 4-2.

The Nor'easters, however, took back the lead for good in the 3rd, crossing the plate four times. Abby Lambert capped the scoring in the frame with a two-RBI double to left-center.

Three more came in both the 4th and 5th innings for UNE, which was led by Vallante with four hits and four runs. Pelkey, who allowed one earned run while striking out five in six innings to up her individual mark to 4-1, also recorded two hits at the plate. Cat Ouellette knocked in a pair of runs to help fuel the attack, and Lauren Doneski punched out two of the four Gordon hitters she faced in the last half of the 7th.

Abigail Knowlton was saddled with the setback, chalking up five strikeouts against zero walks.

The Nor'easters are back in action Sunday at Western New England University (5-1 CCC). The Fighting Scots return to the field on Monday to face Curry College (3-3 CCC).
