Western New England picks up CCC win over UNE

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Western New England University surrendered the opening goal to the University of New England but tallied 16 of the next 17 on the way to a 19-6 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's lacrosse win on Saturday afternoon (Mar. 28) at Golden Bear Stadium.

The Golden Bears (5-4) now stand at 2-0 in league play, while the Nor'easters (0-2 CCC) dip below .500 for the first time this season at 4-5.

Justin Bard paced the balanced WNE attack with four goals, as Max Berteletti, Garrett Mullins, and Jon Bota chipped in with three goals apiece. David Cedrone and Wade Modestow combined to win 16-of-21 face-offs and collected 15 ground balls.

Brandon Body made six saves in a little more than 33 minutes between the pipes to backstop the win for the Golden Bears.

UNE received a goal each from Shamus Higginbottom, Connor Leggett, Keston Beauregard, J.T. Oliver, and Tom Luttrell, with Dan Auger and David Rubenstein both registering two assists. Andrew Kelly had a game-high three caused turnovers.

John Dusel and David Pearson split time in goal for the Nor'easters, making eight and six saves, respectively.

Western New England, which finished with a 43-34 edge in shots, led 4-1 after 15 minutes, 10-2 at the half, and 18-3 through the 3rd period.

Big Blue hosts a non-league match against Colby College on Tuesday (6 p.m.).
