Widener surges in 2nd half to best Nor'easters

CHESTER, Pa. -- Widener University produced seven unanswered goals in a span of 11:17 crossing over the 3rd and 4th quarters to claim a 12-7 victory over the University of New England in men's lacrosse action Wednesday afternoon (Mar. 18) at Leslie C. Quick, Jr. Stadium.

The triumph is the first the year for the Pride (1-6), while the Nor'easters fall back to 3-3 overall.

Six players scored for Widener, led by Vince Marra with three. Patrick Richardson, Tim Taylor, Marc LaVine, and Bryan Shields each had two goals. LaVine and Anthony Paone (18-of-22 face-offs) shared the team-high of seven ground balls. Chris Treat made 10 saves defending the cage.

UNE received a pair of goals from Andrew Curro, and one apiece from Shamus Higginbottom, Sam Cloutier, Dan Auger, David Rubenstein, and Keston Beauregard. John Dusel registered 12 saves for Big Blue, which was out-shot by a 47-33 margin.

The Pride also finished with a 40-26 advantage in ground balls.

Widener finished the opening period with a three-goal run to go up 4-1, but the Nor'easters started the 2nd frame with three straight to tie things up.

Taylor gave the hosts a 5-4 edge at halftime, only to see Curro and Higginbottom swing UNE in front (6-5) with 7:06 left in the 3rd.

Five of the Pride found the back of the net during the deciding stretch.

The Nor'easters return to Maine to visit the University of Southern Maine on Saturday (1 p.m.).
