Box ScoreBIDDEFORD, Maine -- Matt Lemire had a hand in half of University of Massachusetts Boston's offense with a goal and three assists, as the Beacons earned an 8-3 New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) win over the University of New England Friday evening (Nov. 20) at the Harold Alfond Forum.
The Beacons -- ranked 10th in the United States College Hockey Online (USCHO) poll -- remain unbeaten at 5-0-0 overall, 3-0-0 in conference games. UNE suffered its third consecutive setback to dip to 1-3-1 overall and 1-3-0 in NEHC play.
UMass Boston came out flying in the opening period, establishing a 3-1 lead before settling for a 3-2 advantage heading into intermission. The Beacons outshot the hosts 18-7 over the initial 20 minutes.
Garrett Sanipass got UMass Boston on the scoreboard at 2:07 of the frame, snapping home a wrist shot from the right circle on an odd-man rush. The Nor'easters got the goal right back, however, as scored from the right circle with a wrister. The Beacons grabbed a one-goal lead once again just 27 seconds later when a shot by Lemire deflected off goaltender
Mason Riley's glove but trickled over the goal line. The lead doubled to 3-1 at 15:04 on a nifty move by Zach Lindsay. Lindsay carried the puck behind the net before crossing in front from the right side and stuffing it home. UNE once again sliced its deficit to one (3-2) when
Dylan Bengston back-handed a pass into the goal from the slot.
UMass Boston had a quick start in the second to seize momentum. Tyler Bishop scored from the slot on the power play to give the Beacons a 4-2 lead just 41 seconds into the period before Lindsay tallied his second of the evening to push UMass Boston's lead to three (5-2) at the 3:20 mark. UNE got one back a little more than four minutes later when
Armand Uomoleale netted his third goal of the season.
The Beacons would pull away with a trio of markers in the final frame. Colin Larkin scored at 3:09, followed by Drew Gannon's first career goal at 5:16. David MacGregor added his first career tally at 15:24 to complete the scoring for the evening.
Billy Faust earned the win in goal with 33 saves for the Beacons, who finished with a 43-36 edge in shots on goal.
Riley had 12 stops in 15:04 of playing time before giving way to
Joe Noonan, who recorded 23 saves the rest of the way.
Both teams return to action tomorrow with NEHC tilts. UMass Boston travels up the road to face the University of Southern Maine (4 p.m.), while the Nor'easters host No. 6 Babson College (4 p.m.).
