Fast start leads Nor'easters past Hunter, 90-73

Box Score

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England men's basketball team jumped out to an 18-2 cushion after six minutes and never trailed in a 90-73 victory over Hunter College in the consolation match of UNE's Ramada Roundball Invitational on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 14) at the Harold Alfond Forum.

All-Tournament selection Devin Thompson paced the Nor'easters (1-1) with 21 points in just 20 minutes, largely behind 5-of-6 shooting from deep. CJ Autry scored eight of his 14 points during the opening stretch, and Gavin Dibble chipped in with another 14 -- both before fouling out of the contest. Ben Judson netted 13 points off the bench and Drew Coveney dished out 11 assists to go with his seven points and six rebounds.

Big Blue shot 57 percent (17-30) from the field after halftime to pull away from a five-point lead at the break.

After the slow beginning, the Hawks (0-2) managed to shave the deficit back down to two until a late trey by Dibble gave the hosts a 38-33 edge at intermission.

Hunter was still hanging around (54-48 UNE) near the midway mark of the second period, before five straight from Judson followed soon after by a three-point play by Dibble pushed the spread into double digits for good.

All-Tournament honoree Brian Kruger, along with Matt Franks and Vuyisile Beschta, tallied 14 points for the Hawks. Franks also pulled in a game-best eight boards.

Later in the event's championship game, Colby-Sawyer College defeated Saint Joseph's College of Maine by a score of 84-72. Tournament MVP Wol Majong and all-tourney pick Peter Donato led the Chargers to the title, while All-Tournament selections Andrew Ruffen and John Crawley guided the Monks.

UNE returns to action on Tuesday (5:30 p.m.) for a home date with the University of Southern Maine.
