Lambrese, Rumery guide UNE sweep of Curry

Box Score

MILTON, Mass. -- Courtney Lambrese and Emily Rumery notched 12 kills apiece to lead the University of New England to a 3-0 victory over Curry College in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's volleyball action on Tuesday evening (Oct. 13). Set scores were 25-23, 25-21, and 28-26.

The Nor'easters (6-10, 3-2 CCC) have swept each of the five all-time meetings with the Colonels (8-9, 1-3 CCC).

Supporting the front line was Grayson Szczepaniak, who registered six kills and contributed to five of UNE's six team blocks. Brooke Gibbons tallied 34 assists for the visitors, while libero Brittany Morrison pulled up 21 digs.

For the hosts, Nicole Rice paced the attack with 11 winners and Nicole Grambley posted a team-high 15 points with eight kills and seven aces. Grace Stafford and Courtney Carroll led Curry's defensive efforts with 12 and 10 digs, respectively, and Grambley added nine. Makayla Hughes had 12 assists and eight digs.

Five straight points had the Colonels on top at 16-13 in the opening frame, before the Nor'easters countered with six unanswered (19-13). Curry needed four in-a-row to level things at 21-all, and even again at 23-all, it was a Rumery winner that put Big Blue in front for good.

In the second set, neither side could secure more than three consecutive points prior to the finish, when UNE broke away from a tie at 21-all with the help of three Curry errors.

The Nor'easters had the edge for the majority of the third, and were one point away from closing out the match when a pair of kills by Rice and two UNE errors knotted the score (24-all). The Colonels actually had set-point at 26-25 but a kill by Szczepaniak equaled things, and an ace by Gibbons followed by a block by Szczepaniak and Erika Sawicki sealed the deal.

UNE stays on the road for a visit to Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Thursday (6:30 p.m.).
