BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Six different players found the back of the net for Norwich University as the nation's second-ranked squad skated to a 6-1 ECAC East men's ice hockey victory over the University of New England on Friday evening (Jan. 23) at the Harold Alfond Forum.

Bouncing back from just their second loss of the year the last time out, the Cadets improve to 15-2-1 overall and 11-0-0 in league action. The Nor'easters slip back to 6-11-1 on the season (4-7-1 ECAC East).

Anthony Flaherty got the visitors going with 3:42 gone in the opening frame, punching home a rebound at the right post off a save. Norwich doubled the margin at the 10:28 mark on the power play, as Gerard McEleney collected a wide shot off the back boards and scored in front.

Just over three minutes later the Cadets cashed in on another man-advantage, when Brian Rowland put a shot from the left point through a screen in the middle and into the upper right corner of the cage.

UNE trimmed the gap to two (3-1) with 1:24 to go before the intermission on a power play goal by Trevor Fleurent. Zeth Zielinski and Jared Melman assisted on the play.

Norwich out-shot the hosts by a 17-9 margin in the 1st period.

The only score of the 2nd stanza came with 4:25 elapsed, as Paul Russell redirected a shot from the blue line off its original path and just inside the right post.

Alec Thieda and Dean Niezgoda registered goals in the latter stages of the 3rd period to provide the final spread. Norwich ended the night on top of a 39-26 cushion in shots, and received offensive support from William Pelletier (4 assists) and Rowland (2 asissts).

Ty Reichenbach upped his personal ledger to 8-0-1 with 25 saves for the Cadets. His counterpart on UNE, Colby Drost, recorded 33 stops.

Norwich heads up the coast to the University of Southern Maine on Saturday (4 p.m.), while the Nor'easters are scheduled for a 2 p.m. match with Saint Michael's College earlier in the afternoon.
