Polar Bears post 2-0 victory over Nor'easters

Box Score

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Bowdoin College scored twice in just over two minutes during the late stages of the 1st half to defeat the University of New England by a 2-0 margin in non-conference men's soccer action Tuesday afternoon (Sep. 23) at Pickard Field.

After the first meeting between the teams since 2006, the Polar Bears improve to 3-3-0 on the year and the Nor'easters fall back to 3-3-1.

The game was scoreless for most of the initial period until Bowdoin's Nick DiStefano knocked in a rebound in the 36th minute. Matt Dias Costa registered an assist as his shot was denied by UNE senior goalie Aidan McParland, but DiStefano was right there in front to slot a shot just under the crossbar.

The lead doubled 2:18 later when a dangerous cross from Dias Costa became an own goal against UNE, as the ball was inadvertently bumped in by a defender.

Shots were 14-2 in favor of the Polar Bears at the break, with McParland stepping up to make seven saves.

Bowdoin continued to apply heavy pressure in the 2nd half, on the way to a 26-5 advantage in shots and 9-1 in corner kicks, but it could not solve McParland again. The Big Blue netminder finished the day with a season-high 12 stops.

Noah Safian turned away a pair of UNE tries that came his direction over 81 minutes in net for the Polar Bears.

The Nor'easters resume Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play on Saturday (2:30 p.m.) at Eastern Nazarene College.
