Box ScoreBIDDEFORD, Maine -- Seniors Hannah Midwinter and Taylor McSherry each tallied a goal and assist in the 2nd half to lift Gordon College to a 2-0 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's soccer victory over the University of New England on Saturday afternoon (Sep. 20) at Barbara J. Hazard Field.
The Fighting Scots improve to 6-2 on the season (2-0 CCC), while the Nor'easters suffer their first setback of year, back to 5-1 overall (1-1 CCC).
After a scoreless opening period, Gordon struck in the 63rd minute when McSherry found her classmate down the right side, and Midwinter bounced a low shot off a defender and up over the goalie.
The visitors absorbed the UNE pressure and added an insurance goal in the 89th minute to seal the win. This time it was Midwinter hit McSherry in stride down the left wing and the forward slotted a low shot just inside the near post.
Junior McKenzie Dion turned in five saves to earn the shutout for Gordon, which was out-shot by a 15-9 margin.
For the Nor'easters, sophomore
Brielle Robinson posted six stops.
Both sides are back in action Wednesday (4 p.m.) with non-conference dates. The Fighting Scots host New England College, and UNE travels to nationally-ranked Bowdoin College.
