BRISTOL, R.I. -- The University of New England rallied from an early three-run deficit to top Roger Williams University, 12-4 (6 innings), in game two of a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) softball doubleheader played Tuesday afternoon (Apr. 1) at Paolino Field. The Hawks took the opener by a 5-2 margin.

The split moves the Nor'easters to 10-8 overall and 4-2 in league action. RWU (3-1 CCC) remains at .500 on the season with a record of 8-8.

Big Blue responded to the Roger Williams three-run 1st inning in game two with five runs in the top of the 2nd. A one-out double to left-center by senior Jessica Potter scored junior Adrienne Chase and put UNE on the board, and a sacrifice fly three batters later managed to tie things at 3-3. Then senior Amanda Vaudreuil launched a two-run shot over the fence in left-center to give the Nor'easters the lead for good.

It was the fourth home run in the last eight games for the reigning CCC Player of the Week, who has hit safely in all but two of UNE's 18 games thus far, and has 54 total bases.

First-year pitcher Katelyn Austin left with a 7-4 cushion during the bottom of the 4th, and sophomore Lauren Doneski shut down the Hawks the rest of the way to improve her personal mark to 4-3.

The Nor'easters tacked on five more runs in the 6th to provide the final margin. Vaudreuil and Chase each tallied their third hit of the contest with RBI-doubles in the frame. Sophomore Kelly Murphy added a two-run single up the middle for her second hit.

Tori Milano took the loss for the Hawks in 5 1/3 innings of work, while going 3-for-3 on her own at the plate. Samantha Mittel, Caroline Atkinson, and Veronica Alicea each had a pair of hits in the game; Aktinson's first was a two-run homer to left in the 1st inning.

Roger Williams took advantage of three UNE errors in the bottom of the 1st in game one, scoring twice to get out in front.

Big Blue leveled it at 2-2 in the top of the 3rd, as sophomore Abby Lambert and Kelly drove in first-year Sydney Helmbrecht and Vaudreuil, respectively, for runs.

The score remained tied until the home half of the 6th, when RWU plated three runs. Alicea had a two-RBI single during the inning, before Alicia McCauley singled-home one more. Alicea went 3-for-3 at the dish in the game.

Meghan Maliga (5-3) retired the Nor'easters, in order, during the 7th to seal the win. She struck out three and walked none.

For UNE, eight different players had hits on offense. Lambert was charged with the loss in the circle, surrendering three earned runs.

The Nor'easters return home to face Bates College in non-conference action on Wednesday. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
