Huge first half carries Colby past Nor'easters

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Colby College scored 17 goals before halftime on its way to a 23-12 non-conference victory over University of New England in men's lacrosse action Tuesday afternoon (April 1) at Bill Alfond Field.

The Mules (5-4) avenged their loss to UNE last year by scoring seven times in the opening quarter and 10 more in the second to establish a commanding 17-4 cushion at halftime. The Nor'easters would outscore Colby 8-6 in the second half.

John Grimaldi had a huge game for the Mules, totaling five goals and four assists. Derek Youngman had three goals and four assists, while Austin Sayre and Jeff Vaz each scored three times.

Patrick Wolfe led the Nor'easters with four goals and a pair of assists. Geoff BrunoNick Gross and Mike Allan chipped in two markers apiece.

Colby dominated the stat sheet, topping the Nor'easters in shots (67-30), ground balls (49-11) and face-offs won (33-4). The Mules used a total of four goalkeepers, with starter Tyler Will making three saves in the first half to earn the victory.

Starter Joe Medel had six stops for UNE before giving way to John Dusel, who recorded 19 saves over the final 39:29.

The Nor'easters (3-8) will look to halt a five-game losing skid Saturday (April 5) when they head to Roger Williams University for a Commonwealth Coast Conference match starting at 1 p.m.
