Box Score

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Five different players found the back of the cage in the 2nd quarter as the University of New England built a seven-goal halftime cushion on the way to a 14-4 victory over the University of Southern Maine in non-conference men's lacrosse action Wednesday afternoon (Mar. 5) at the Big Blue Turf.

The triumph is the first of the season for the Nor'easters (1-2), who have now defeated the Huskies (0-2) in five straight meetings.

In all, nine players scored for UNE, with two goals apiece coming from seniors Nick Gross and Fritz Kleinhempel, sophomore Geoff Bruno, and first-years Dan Auger and J.T. Oliver. Senior Patrick Wolfe tallied three assists to help pace the attack, while classmate Dan O'Gorman scooped up nine ground balls and went 11-of-11 in face-offs.

Big Blue sophomore John Dusel posted three saves during the first half to earn the decision in goal. First-year Joe Medel made three stops in the next 22:08, and junior Chris Baker turned away two shots in the remaining 7:52.

The Huskies were led by sophomore Austin Watts with a pair of goals. Senior Dylan Kenney recorded a game-best 10 ground balls and three caused turnovers. Sophomore Ryan Jurgelevich finished with 17 saves, as his side was out-shot by a 49-20 margin.

Three scores in the opening 10 minutes -- from Bruno, Gross, and Kleinhempel -- gave the hosts a lead they would not relinquish.

The teams traded markers in the rest of the 1st period to where UNE held a 5-3 edge after 15 minutes, but the Nor'easters extended the margin to 10-3 at intermission by pocketing all five of the goals in the 2nd quarter.

Both squads are back on the field Saturday (1 p.m.). UNE is set to host Plymouth State University, and Southern Maine is slated to visit Curry College.
