Yellowjackets use late surge to top UNE, 10-3

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Eight runs in the last three innings gave the University of Wisconsin-Superior its seventh straight win, as the Yellowjackets recorded a 10-3 decision over the University of New England on Thursday morning (Mar. 20) at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Softball Classic.

UWS improves to 12-4 behind the arm of Nicolle Gross, who struck out five and walked none while limiting the Nor'easters (5-4) to five hits.

Kristen Haider went 4-for-5 in the game, with two runs batted in on a single in the 7th. Melissa Clark was 2-of-3 at the plate with a go-ahead three-run homer in the top of the 5th. Three other players had two hits apiece.

After the Yellowjackets scored two in the 2nd, UNE took the lead in the bottom of the 4th with three runs. Singles by graduate student Allie Frazier and sophomore Amanda Vallante was followed by a double down the left field line from senior Amanda Vaudreuil, plating Frazier. Both Vallante and Vaudreuil later scored on wild pitches to make it 3-2.

Four runs in the 5th put Wisconsin-Superior on top for good.

Sophomore Lauren Doneski took the setback for UNE in the circle. Frazier was the lone Big Blue player to register multiple hits for the offense.
