FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The University of New England finished its Florida swing in strong fashion, defeating Clarkson University (N.Y.) by a 16-2 margin in five innings on Thursday (Mar. 20) at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Softball Classic.
Big Blue returns to Maine with a record of 6-4. The Golden Knights are winless in 10 games during their inagural season.
Sophomores
Amanda Vallante and
Abby Lambert paced the offense with a combined nine runs batted in (5 and 4, respectively), as Vallante went 3-for-3 at the plate and Lambert made one of her two hits a three-run home to left in the UNE half of the 3rd inning. Senior
Amanda Vaudreuil had two hits, two RBI, and two runs in support.
The Nor'easters received 2-for-2 performances while scoring twice from three other players -- graduate student
Allie Frazier, sophomore
Jess Lemos, and first-year
Paige Moore-Haskell.
Lambert improved her pitching record to 2-1, striking out three against five hits and no walks.
Big Blue posted eight runs while batting in the 3rd to help build a 16-0 cushion through four frames. Clarkson got three of its hits in the top of the 5th en route to scoring both its runs, courtesy of a two-RBI single to left-center by Alycia Short.
Jamie Bridge had two hits to lead the Golden Knights, and also took the loss in the circle.
UNE is scheduled to begin Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play on Tuesday with a doubleheader at Wentworth Institute of Technology. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
