Five-run 6th vaults Big Blue past Wooster, 8-5

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The University of New England plated five runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to turn around a one-run deficit and pick up an 8-5 victory over the College of Wooster (Ohio) on Wednesday morning (Mar. 19) at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Softball Classic.

Big Blue (4-3) trailed 4-0 after the Fighting Scots (6-9) batted in the top of the 4th, but got two back later in the frame on RBI-hits from sophomore Kelly Murphy and first-year Kalie Hernandez.

Junior Adrienne Chase made it 4-3 in the 5th with a two-out infield single, and then in the 6th, first-year Sydney Helmbrecht and sophomore Amanda Vallante had hits to drive in runs to give the Nor'easters a 6-4 edge.

Chase followed soon after with a two-run double to center, and UNE had an 8-4 cushion.

Wooster started the 7th with a single and a double, and got one run back to cut the difference to three, but sophomore Lauren Doneski came in to record the final three outs for the save.

UNE first-year starter Katelyn Austin struck out six over the initial six innings to earn the win (2-1), while walking three and allowing six hits.

Chase finished with three hits, while graduate student Allie Frazier, senior Amanda Vaudreuil, and sophomore Jess Lemos notched two apiece. Eight different players scored for the Nor'easters.

Taylor Raybuck had two hits and two runs for the Fighting Scots. Linea Brouse singled home two runs in the 3rd to put Wooster on the board. Kate Edgehouse took the loss in the circle.
