BEVERLY, Mass. -- Trailing 5-3 early in the second quarter, the Endicott College men's lacrosse team scored 11 unanswered goals to rally for a 14-5 win over University of New England in a mutual Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opener Tuesday afternoon (March 11) at North Field.
Endicott, which is ranked 11th in the most recent United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) national poll, remains unbeaten in the early going at 4-0, while the Nor'easters slip below the .500 mark at 2-3.
The Gulls featured a balanced offense with Jeremy Morgan, Kyle Weber and Harrison Cotter each scoring three times. Mitchell Tapley notched a pair of goals.
For UNE,
Patrick Wolfe scored three times to lead the way.
Dan Auger and
Nick Gross added a goal apiece.
The Nor'easters got off to a strong start to lead 3-2 after one quarter and 5-3 just five minutes into the second. Wolfe tallied all three Big Blue markers in the opening period.
After Gross had given UNE a 5-3 advantage with an unassisted goal at 4:57 of the second, the Gulls closed the half with two goals to draw even (5-5) at the break.
From that point it was all Endicott, as the Gulls held the visitors scoreless the rest of the way while finding the back of the cage nine times. Cotter scored back-to-back goals to get the spurt started, while Morgan notched a pair of scores as Endicott converted six times in the frame.
The Gulls would go on to score three goals in the fourth to win going away.
Tommy Hughes was 12-for-20 on the draw and hauled in a match-best 10 ground balls for the Gulls, who led in shots (43-20) and ground balls (39-30). Goalkeeper Cameron Bell needed just five saves to record the win.
Andrew Kelly had three ground balls and three caused turnovers for the Nor'easters.
John Dusel made nine stops in goal.
UNE will look to return to the .500 mark Saturday (March 15) when it travels to Cambridge, Mass. to take on MIT at 1 p.m.
