Strong first half gets Wheaton past Nor'easters

NORTON, Mass. -- The Wheaton College men's lacrosse team opened up a 7-2 halftime lead on its way to an 8-5 win over the University of New England in a non-conference game played Saturday afternoon (March 1).

The Lyons now stand at 2-0 on the young season, while the Nor'easters drop to 0-1.

Matthew Hillman, Will Morrison and Ryan Gjerset each scored twice for Wheaton. Eric Jansen contributed a pair of assists.

Rookie Andy Curro notched two goals to lead UNE. Senior Patrick Wolfe and first-years J.T. Oliver and Connor Leggett each punched in a goal. Senior Dan O'Gorman was credited with a pair of assists.

Morrison scored twice in the first period to help provide Wheaton with a 3-1 cushion. After Curro got the Nor'easters to within one (3-2) early in the second, Hillman notched a pair of goals during a Wheaton four-goal surge to put the hosts up 7-2 at halftime.

Big Blue scored the lone goal of the third, then the first two of the final period to get within two at 7-5, but Kyle Rumberger gave Wheaton some more breathing room with 4:15 remaining.

Harrison Bramhall and Ryan Clair split time in goal for the Lyons and totaled 10 stops. Sophomore John Dusel denied 15 shots for the Nor'easters.

UNE will look to even its record Monday (March 3) when Morrisville State College makes the long trip from New York. Game time at the Big Blue Turf is scheduled for 3 p.m.
