BABSON PARK, Mass. -- Mike Driscoll scored with 33 seconds left in overtime to give fifth-ranked Babson College a 2-1 victory over University of New England in a ECAC East men's ice hockey game played Friday night (Feb. 7) at the Babson Skating Center.
With the victory, Babson is now 18-3-1 overall and 12-2-1 in the ECAC East, while the University of New England drops to 8-13-1 overall and 5-10-0 in conference play. The Beavers avenged a December loss to the Nor'easters on UNE's home ice.
The Beavers outshot the Nor'easters 53-24 on the night, but the game appeared to be headed for a tie before Driscoll's late score. Senior Andrew Bonazza carried the puck down the right wing and with traffic in front of the net, Driscoll converted a pass from senior Nik Tasiopoulos for his fourth game-winning tally of the season.
Big Blue had gotten on the scoreboard first when rookie David Goff found the back of the cage with UNE down a skater. First-year Nick Wirth carried the puck through the neutral zone and fed Goff, who blasted home a shot from the right face-off circle for a short-handed tally at the 7:12 mark.
Babson battled back to tie the game six minutes later. First-year Dan Casey slipped a shot just inside the left post after Driscoll dropped a pass off after coming through the neutral zone.
The goaltending of UNE junior Colby Drost enabled the Nor'easters to keep the game tied until overtime. Drost was brilliant the entire evening, racking up a career-best 51 saves to hold off Babson.
Jamie Murray had 23 stops to record the win between the pipes for the Beavers.
The Nor'easters will play their final regular-season road contest of the season tomorrow when they face No. 14 UMass Boston at 4 p.m.
