Box ScoreHOOKSETT, N.H. -- Fitchburg State University scored three unanswered goals in the final period to take a 7-4 victory over the University of New England in the consolation game of the PAL Stovepipe Tournament hosted by Southern New Hampshire University on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 30) at the Ice Den.
With the win the Falcons improved their record to 2-5-2. The Nor'easters slipped to 3-6-0.
Patrick Borer got the Nor'easters off to a strong start, scoring consecutive goals in the opening 8:46 to give UNE a 2-0 lead. Borer, who was named to the all-tournament team, would notch the first marker on a wrist-shot inside the far post, then he rifled home a shot to the upper-right corner.
James Gordon cut Fitchburg's deficit in half, scoring his first collegiate goal at the 15:14 mark.
Goals came in bunches in the middle period, as Cameron Snyder and John Celli went back-to-back over the middle portion of the frame to give the Falcons a 3-2 lead.Â
Blaise Healy answered for Big Blue, then Kevin Holmes of Framingham and UNE's
Sam Vikich traded goals to make the score 4-4 heading into the final period.
The deciding period was all Framingham State, as Snyder collected a loose puck on a rebound of Mike Morrison's shot and converted from close range to give the Falcons the lead for good at the 3:02 mark. Timmy Genova would add an insurance goal five minutes later, and Celli tacked on an empty-net goal in the final minute to give the Falcons the victory.
Dan Finn stopped 36 shots for the Falcons, who were out-shot by a margin of 40-26 but were able to score on both of their power-play opportunities.
Colby Drost had 19 saves for UNE, which will look to halt its three-game losing streak Friday (Dec. 5) at UMass Boston.
