BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Rookie Edie Pallozzi scored her first goal of the season in the 20th minute to provide the University of New England all the offense it would need to defeat third-seeded Westfield State University, 1-0, in the semifinals of the 2014 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Women's Soccer Championship played Friday afternoon (Nov. 14) at a cold and windy Barbara J. Hazard Field.

The second-seeded Nor'easters (13-4-2) advance to Sunday's title match, against the winner between No. 1 Wheaton College and No. 4 Framingham State University, which will be decided later this evening.

With the loss, the Owls' season comes to an end with a record of 13-6-2.

Moments after UNE sophomore goalkeeper Brielle Robinson quickly slid to her right post to deny a shot from in close by Westfield senior Asleigh Chretien, Big Blue turned play back down the left sideline. The ball popped loose from a tackle just inside the box, allowing Pallozzi to step in and loft her first touch into the upper right corner.

Owls senior Amanda Grant nearly knotted things in the 27th minute, but Robinson made a diving save to her left and the ball caromed off the frame and out.

Early in the 2nd half, UNE senior Margaret Palmer came close to doubling the margin, as her high shot from 20 yards was saved by WSU sophomore goalie Anne Stack back up off the crossbar.

In the 58th minute, Stack was up to maintaining the one-goal deficit, making a diving save to her right just to get a tip on a hard, low shot from UNE first-year Becca Murphy on the right side.

Westfield State pressed forward down the stretch, however could not find the tying finish before time expired.

Robinson ended with eight stops, while Stack totaled 10. The Nor'easters held a 17-14 edge in shots for the contest.

Big Blue's win count (13) is the most since 2009, when the program was victorious 15 times during the year.
