Matthew Christie scored in the 64th minute to give the University of New England a 1-0 win over Western New England University in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's soccer match Saturday afternoon (Oct. 4) at Suprenant Field.
The victory was the Nor'easters first over WNE since the Golden Bears joined the CCC in 2007. UNE (6-3-1, 2-2 CCC) had previously gone 0-9-1 versus Western New England (7-6-1, 1-3). In their seven years in the league, the Golden Bears have captured five conference titles, including last year when they advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championship.
Play was tight throughout and neither team was able to convert until Christie received a short pass from
Tyler Garnick on a UNE counter up the right side. Christie finished the play just inside the near post from six yards out for the lone tally of the afternoon.
UNE goalkeeper
Aidan McParland was credited with seven saves in registering his fourth shutout of year and 13th career. His counterpart, Kevin Strobel, had three stops for the Golden Bears.
Both sides of the stat sheet were nearly a carbon copy, with Western New England holding slight edges in shots (13-12) and corner kicks (5-4).
The Nor'easters will look for their fourth consecutive victory Wednesday when they take on Johnson & Wales University. Kick-off time at the Wildcat Outdoor Complex in Cranston, R.I. is slated for 6:30 p.m.
