Box ScoreBRISTOL, R.I. -- Andrew Carlson scored twice in a span of five minutes just past the middle of the 1st half and Roger Williams University hung on in the 2nd period to top the University of New England, 2-1, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's soccer action Saturday afternoon (Oct. 25) at Bayside Field.
The win moves the Hawks (9-6-2, 4-3-1 CCC) out of a tie with the Nor'easters (9-5-2, 3-4-1 CCC) in the league standings.
While scoring chances were limited for both sides in the opening frame, Carlson managed to convert two of the five shots for the hosts. James Sheldon found Carlson on the left side for the initial marker in the 26th minute, and then in the 31st minute, Tyler Kuchenbecker cut back a pass from the right end line into the middle that Carlson hammered in-stride.
UNE applied pressure coming out of halftime, and a loose ball in front was flicked home in the 49th minute by
Erik Holmqvist -- the first tally of the season for the center back.
Big Blue continued to push forward, and finished the stanza with a 9-3 cushion in shots, but could not find the equalizer before the final horn.
Both Tom Mangels of RWU and
Aidan McParland of UNE recorded five saves on the day.
The Hawks head to Gordon College for the regular-season finale on Tuesday (7 p.m.). The Nor'easters visit Curry College the same night (6:30 p.m.).
