Darius Ntacyo scored in the 54th minute to give the University of New England a 1-0 victory over Nichols College in a Commonwealth Coast Conference men's soccer match played Saturday (Oct. 18) at Barbara J. Hazard Field.
The win was the first for the Nor'easters (9-3-1, 3-2-1 CCC) in the last 10 meetings with the Bison (9-2-3, 4-1-1), who went into the day as the CCC's lone unbeaten team.Â
After a scoreless first half, the teams were forced to break for nearly two hours as thunderstorms and heavy rain moved through the area. When play resumed, UNE struck for the match's only goal at 53:10 when Ntacyo received a pass from junior
Sean Goodrich and weaved his way into the box before drilling a shot into the right side of the goal for his second-game winner of the season.
The Nor'easters went into a defensive mode in the closing stages, dropping nine players back in their defensive end of the field for much of the rest of the way. Senior goalkeeper
Aidan McParland came up with a big stop in the 73rd minute, diving to his right to punch away a free kick by Nichols first-year Rielee Mohsin.
McParland finished with five saves to record his sixth shutout of the season.
Senior Jeremy Nash had one save for the Bison, who outshot UNE by a margin of 21-4.
Both teams host CCC opponents on Wednesday, with Western England University traveling to Nichols and Salve Regina University heading to UNE.
