Nor'easters, Leopards play to 1-1 stalemate

Box Score

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- After each scoring first-half goals, the University of New England and Wentworth Institute of Technology went scoreless the rest of the way for a 1-1 double-overtime tie in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's soccer match Saturday afternoon (Oct. 11) at Barbara J. Hazard Field.

The tie halted a four-game losing streak for the Leopards (5-6-2, 1-3-1 CCC), while UNE (8-2-1, 3-1-1) is unbeaten in its last four matches.

Wentworth sophomore Mary Annon opened the scoring in the 18th minute when she converted a free kick from nearly 40 yards out.

The Nor'easters tied the score less than six minutes later after first-year Becca Murphy found junior Tori Field near the top of the box. Field pushed a shot towards the left of the frame, and the ball grazed the post before trickling into the goal.

After halftime, the Leopards applied pressure offensively and nearly grabbed a 2-1 lead in the 68th minute, but UNE sophomore goalkeeper Brielle Robinson dove to her left to push away a header from close range by Wentworth senior Olivia Moore. Robinson had several other stops the rest of the way to keep the match knotted.

For the game Wentworth came away with advantages in both shots (19-9) and corner kicks (6-4).

Robinson ended the afternoon with seven saves and senior Beverly Farris had three for the Leopards.

Both teams have weekday non-conference home games this week. UNE hosts University of Southern Maine on Tuesday (6:30 p.m.), and Wentworth takes on Framingham State College on Thursday (7 p.m.).
