Box ScoreBIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England and Wentworth Institute of Technology each scored early in the second half in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's soccer match that ended in a 1-1 double-overtime tie Saturday afternoon (Oct. 11) at Barbara J. Hazard Field.
The Nor'easters extended their unbeaten streak to five matches and now own a 7-3-2 record, 2-2-1 in conference play. Wentworth is 4-5-4, 2-2-1 in CCC matches.
UNE was the first to get on the scoreboard. After a scoreless first half, first-year Darius Ntayco slotted a pass to graduate student
Matthew Christie, who took one touch and drove a low shot into the back of the net for his team-high fourth goal of the season. Sophomore
Ryan Stephens was credited with a secondary assist on the play, which came in the 49th minute.
The Leopards wasted little time in responding, however, knotting the score less than three minutes later when senior Adam Rhodes re-directed a free kick from just inside half field by junior Sam Martins.
After the two teams went scoreless the remainder of regulation and much overtime, the Nor'easters nearly claimed victory with just over a minute to play. A shot from close range by senior
Jeremy Hill was blocked, then sophomore
Erik Holmqvist collected the ricochet and put a shot on-frame that was headed into the net before a Wentworth defender cleared the ball off the goal line.
First-year goalkeeper Noah Scanlon had seven saves in his first collegiate appearance for the Leopards, while UNE senior
Aidan McParland had nine stops.
Wentworth held a slight lead in shots (23-20) but trailed in corner kicks (8-5).
The Nor'easters are back at home Tuesday when they host the University of Southern Maine for a non-conference match starting at 6:30 p.m. The Leopards are idle until next Saturday when they take on CCC foe Western New England University at home. The game is slated to kick-off at 3:30 p.m.
