Colby-Sawyer recovers to rally past Nor'easters

NEW LONDON, N.H. -- The host Colby-Sawyer College Chargers rallied from a 2-1 deficit to overcome the University of New England and earn a 3-2 victory Saturday afternoon (Sep. 7) to complete a non-conference volleyball tri-match at Coffin Field House.

Set scores for the match were 23-25, 25-15, 14-25, 25-13, 15-8.

After dropping their first two matches of the season, the Chargers now stand at 3-2. UNE (2-1) lost for the first time in three starts.

First-year Grayson Szczepaniak paced the Nor'easters with 12 kills and three service aces. Juniors Leah Janelle and Rachel McGahie each recorded 11 kills, with McGahie's output matching her career high. Senior Angie Brunette contributed nine kills. Senior setter Maria Kuehl went for 38 assists and 15 digs.

Defensively, senior Kirsta Adie had a team-high 19 digs for UNE. Janelle and McGahie had 15 and 14. respectively, while rookie Nikki Mathewson added 11.

Courtney O'Hara put down 14 kills for Colby-Sawyer to lead all players. Laura Smolinski fueled the Chargers' attack with 42 assists.

Big Blue returns to action Tuesday (Sep. 10) when they host Bowdoin College at the Harold Alfond Forum at 6:30 p.m.
