BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Sophomore Jackie Dickerson scored in the first half, and junior Margaret Palmer added a late insurance goal to give the University of New England a 2-0 victory over Saint Joseph's College of Maine in non-conference women's soccer action Wednesday afternoon (Sep. 4) at Barbara J. Hazard Field.
The win evened the Nor'easters record at 1-1 on the young season, while the Monks suffered their first setback in three outings.
UNE got on the scoreboard late in the first half when senior Ellie Arsenault took a few touches up the left side and pushed a pass ahead to Dickerson, who maneuvered a low shot around St. Joe's senior goalkeeper Jaci Lorenzen, who had come off the goal line.
Despite a advantage in total shots, the Nor'easters were unable to build on their lead until the 86th minute. After a St. Joe's foul, Palmer drove a free kick into the upper left-hand corner of the frame for her fifth career goal.
Senior Gina Iannazzi made the scoring stand up for Big Blue, coming up with four saves on nine SJC shots for her third shutout.
Renewing a rivalry... |
Despite being located less than an hour apart, this was the first meeting between the two teams since 1998. UNE broke a two-game losing streak to the Monks while improving to 7-9-2 in the all-time series. |
Lorenzen had a total of nine saves on 19 UNE shots.
The Nor'easters return to action this weekend at an invitational tournament in the greater Boston area. UNE plays at Babson College (1:30 p.m.) Saturday and at Wellesley College Sunday (1 p.m.).
The Monks are off until next Tuesday (Sep. 10) when they play their home-opener versus UMaine Farmington (4 p.m.).
