Nor'easters run to title at Blazer Invitational

CHICOPEE, Mass. -- The University of New England men's cross country team continued its torrid start to the season, earning first-place honors at the Blazer Invitational hosted by Elms College on Saturday (Sept. 28).

The Nor'easters finished with an aggregate score of 36 points to top runner-up Westfield State University by 11. Connecticut College (75), Trinity College (80) and Massachusetts Maritime Academy (155) completed the first five team finishers in the 12-squad field.

Sophomore CJ Vallie placed third overall for UNE, recording an 8,000-meter time of 28:17. The Nor'easters were also buoyed first-year Paul Mangiafico (28;39), junior Shane Murphy (28:44) and junior Peter LePage (28:47), who finished in one after another in sixth, seventh and eighth place, respectively. Chad Lyons was the final Big Blue runner to score, posting a time of 29:13 to grab the 16th spot.

Tim Shea of Westfield State was the individual winner with a time of 27:20.

The Nor'easters are off next week before returning to action Oct. 12 with split-squad meets at Westfield State University (James Earley Invitational) and Saint Joseph's College of Maine.
