Box Score

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The Bowdoin College Polar Bears scored a pair of goals in each half on their way to a 4-0 shutout of the University of New England in a non-conference women's soccer match played under the lights at Barbara J. Hazard Field Tuesday evening (Sept. 24).

The victory improved the Polar Bears' record to 4-1-1, while the Nor'easters dropped below the .500 mark at 3-4.

Bowdoin would get all the scoring it would need in the 13th minute when sophomore Jamie Hofstetter converted a penalty kick after UNE was whistled for a foul in the box.

The Polar Bears doubled their lead in the 26th minute as senior Molly Popolizio found the back of the net with a header off a high cross from the right corner by first-year Maya Norman.

The visitors scored two more times after halftime. Sophomore Kiersten Turner knocked in Bowdoin's second penalty kick of the evening at 52:32, then first-year Evan Fencik buried a blast from 25 yards out with just under 15 minutes to play.

Bowdoin held a considerable margin in shots (28-6), including a 16-2 cushion in shots on goal.

Sophomore keeper Bridget McCarthy played the initial 61:30 in goal, making one stop to earn the win. First-year Casey Krause came on to make one save the rest of the way.

Senior Gina Iannazzi registered 11 saves in 80:02 of playing time for Big Blue. Rookie Brielle Robinson relieved her and turned aside one shot.

Both teams return to action Saturday (Sept. 28). Bowdoin hosts #17 Brandeis University at 1 p.m., and the Nor'easters entertain Curry College for a Commonwealth Coast Conference game starting at 3:30 p.m.
