BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Junior Jayne Kelly scored with 55 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the University of New England to a 1-1 tie with Western New England University in a Commmonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's soccer match Saturday (Sept. 21) afternoon at Barbara J. Hazard Field.
Both teams now stand at 4-3-1 overall. UNE is 1-0-1 in conference play, while the Golden Bears own an 0-1-1 mark.
It appeared Western New England was going to claim a road win, but Kelly drew UNE even when she collected a loose ball and drove a high shot from just outside the box into the upper right-hand corner of the net.
The Golden Bears took a 1-0 advantage on a set piece in the 61st minute. First-year Katelyn Cummings crossed the ball from the left side to find junior Bonnie Bousquet, who deposited a header under the bar.
Each team had a quality scoring opportunity in extra time. WNE first-year Tayler Mazurski had shot sail just high halfway through the first overtime period, then UNE junior Margaret Palmer punched a shot over the crossbar with just over four minutes remaining in the second extra frame.
For the match, the Nor'easters led in both shots (22-6) and corner kicks (8-2).
Sophomore Briana Kubik had eight saves for Western New England, while senior Gina Iannazzi had one stop for Big Blue.
Both teams play non-conference matches on Tuesday. The Golden Bears make the short trip to Elms College for a 4 p.m. game. UNE hosts Bowdoin College at 6:30 p.m.
